Ayscoughfee Hall School curriculum is closely allied to the National Curriculum. However, as an independent school we feel that these guidelines can be restrictive and we extend them where necessary to create the all-round education that makes our school unique. For example, we offer Spanish from Reception to Year 6, Swimming for Years 1 to 4, Cookery and Forest School activities for all.

The core subjects for children are Literacy, Mathematics, Science and Computing.

At Ayscoughfee we use specialist teachers for specific subjects to enhance the curriculum. We feel this is a strength of the school as we use the specialisms of individual teachers to improve standards. We use specialist teachers for French, Spanish, PE and Games, Music and Computing.

The size of the school means that teachers get to know every child in the school very quickly; all classes have assemblies and playtime together along with opportunities to mix on special occasions such as book week or theme days.

A range of formal and informal assessments focussing on key mathematical and literacy skills are undertaken regularly. The data obtained is used to focus on and track the individual progress and development of each child. Small class sizes and considering every child as an individual, allow us to deliver a wealth of educational opportunities within our broad curriculum.

Parents have regular opportunities to come into school and see what the children have been doing, chat with the teachers and view the displays around the school.

Prior to transfer, children have a ‘meet your new teacher’ session in the penultimate week of the Summer term. Curriculum evenings are then held at the start of each academic year for each class. These are held in the classrooms. This is a chance for you to see what the children will be studying over the next year and an opportunity for you to ask any questions.

Academic progress

Reports are sent out at the end of every term for all pupils. The Summer term report is the most detailed of these. Parent Consultations occur twice a year and enable the class teacher to provide concise feedback on your child’s progress. Additional time or appointments can be arranged where necessary and there is an opportunity for parents to follow up with a meeting following the Summer report.
