STEM and Wellbeing Week

Following the success of our Wellbeing Week last year, members of the school council thought it would be a great idea to include STEM activities. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Introducing STEM for children develops creators, thinkers, problem solvers, doers, innovators and inventors. Exposing children to simple STEM activities at an early age today sets a foundation for higher learning tomorrow.

All week our children took part in STEM and Wellbeing activities, which kick started with ‘Maths Monday’. Teachers from Spalding High School joined us to work with the junior children on maths activities. Mr Roberts worked with the infant children to have some fun with maths and encourage enthusiasm and positivity towards number work.

‘Technology Tuesday’, saw parents and members of the extended Ayscoughfee family volunteer their time to talk about their work in different areas of STEM. Mr Fairbrother spoke to the children about the Construction industry. Mr Howard from Sycamore BMW brought in a BMW iX xDrive5M Sport and spoke to the children about electric vehicles. The children really enjoyed exploring the BMW iX for themselves and asked lots of brilliant questions about the future of the electrification journey. We were also joined by Mrs Halifax who spoke about hygiene in the food industry, whilst Mrs Hendry explained about the research that goes into developing medicines.

On Wednesday, all the children and staff walked laps of the school for our Wellbeing Walk. The morning started off with a ‘warm up’ with Miss Lawniczak followed by the walk itself. Children and parents on this day were encouraged to walk or park and stride to school, with children earning themselves a sticker for their efforts.

Children brought chopped up fruit to school for ‘Fruity Thursday’ and created their own fruit kebabs for breaktime. Our Eco club were proud to pick and slice fresh cucumbers grown in the school poly tunnel, and handed them out to children to enjoy as a refreshing cucumber snack at break time.

To round the week off, children came to school dressed in pyjamas or lounge wear to relax into our ‘Funky Friday’.

The children had a fantastic week which was both fun and informative for all involved. Thank you to all our guest speakers, we could not have done it without you!
